US PGY2 IM resident applying for Fellowships in Canada.

I would like to pursue a GI fellowship in canada although I have heard that you require 4 years of training prior to fellowship application. Is anyone familiar with the process? I know there is a difference in training duration 3 vs 4 years for internal medicine. If anyone is familair with the process iw ould be forever grateful. it seems extremely convoluted.
